After some REAL testing . OK, I purchased this item last week, and I must say I am VERY impressed by it. I own several Verbatim 512 usb drives, a Sony 2gb usb drive, a Lexar 2 gb drive, and some smaller office usb drives (8 usb drives in total) and I must say this Imation drive is the best of all of these.

As to the comment made by the reviewer before about this drive being slow, this is simply not true. If you have a USB 2.0 capable system (newer to semi-newer system have by default) than this drive is actually very fast. I put over 3GB of software on my drive (THREE GIGABYTE!) and did this in less than 30 minutes, and that includes the time of me selecting the files I wanted to load on this! And my software folder on there alone has 1192 individual files in it! So to say this drive is slow, I can only say that there is something wrong with your system if it appears slow.

(Keep in mind, there is a difference between loading a few large files, and many little files; it will take longer to load numerous files than it does to load large files in small numbers. So if you're uploading 4311 small files equaling 1 gb to your drive, it takes longer than uploading 100 files that equal 1gb in size. But this is true for all usb drives and also for hard drives, and if any performance loss occurs because of this, it is in no way particular to this drive.)

Furthermore, from my experience with other usb flash drives I can say this: the Lexar lightning drive, the one with the chrome exterior, is also fast, but the Lexar get EXTREMELY hot to the touch, which can certainly not be considered good. So remember that when you're looking into purchasing one of those. In contrast, this Imation 4gb drive did not change temperature AT ALL, and I touched it during and just after transferring those 3gb of stuff, and it did not even feel slightly warm. That is just utterly amazing to me! So it is fast, and it is cool. So I am very impressed. It is also a lot faster than the Sony 2gb retractable usb drive that I have.

You can indeed wear it on your keychain. I actually did this because of the first reviewer's comments, and I love it! Now I always have my stuff on me, and if I ever need to help someone with their PC problem, or I need one of my files, I have it on me.

The rubber sleeve, wherein the little usb drive itself fits, is very flexible/mouldable, and the drive itself sits very snugly into it, and there is no risk of it coming out. The o-ring itself is fortified and made out of hard plastic, as so that it is strong and rugged. I took the clip itself off because I have it on a metal ring that also contains my keys, but I could see how the clip could be handy if you want to hang it on your belt-loop or something.

What else can I say? I am really impressed with this drive and I would recommend it to anyone.
Imation Clip 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Reviews
Protected and massive storage . I owned the 1GB version of this for a long time and purchased the 4GB version for my partner. He, like I, has been thrilled with the Caribeener clip as we both keep it on our key rings at all times now. So there's never a time when we are without the ability to store files.

I keep my passwords on mine, so no matter where I am, I have access to them. (It is encrypted.) But something like PortableApps will make this even more useful.

No downsides that I've found.
Imation Clip 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Opinions
Imation Clip 4 GB USB Drive . I like to clip it to my backpack, easy to find and use - main reason I prefer this particular brand. Using it as a regular USB drive (never tried security features). Reasonably fast ReadWrite, Write-protection switch on top is a nice touch. Last, not least - price was just right.
Sweet storage option - fast compact and protected . I have used the 4GB clip for about a year now. I use it almost everyday to play music through my car stereo, which means that it is constantly running. It plays music smoothly, and when I change songs or albums, it quickly accesses other folders. I would buy this flash drive just because it holds a ton of music and it has quick access.

The most critical feature though for me is its small size. I broke two flash drives in my car stereo because they project too far from the face of the stereo and got caught on things or people going in and out of the car. This clip drive has an extremely small profile that works perfectly in my car stereo - or projecting from my computer when I am loading in new music.

The transfer rate is incredibly fast given the amount of information that I move on and off my drive all the time. I have used several different brands and this one definitely matches or beats their speeds.

The rubber case holds up well and securely protects the clip. It is easy to take the drive out but it cannot fall out or be knocked out. Now that the price is lower on this drive, I will be buying a second one.
The best flash drive I've ever had-- durable fast and convenient . If you're like me and you are constantly on the move, but always seem to lose and break your gadgets, this is the USB for you. The rubber casing keeps your portable flash drive safe and the large clip securely hooks onto your belt, backpack, etc, so you never lose it. This flash drive has taken me safely through grad school (running back and forth between the library, classes, home and work). The 4GB has been enough memory for all of my papers and homework assignments. I highly recommend it.
Favorite flash drive for keychain . I started using the Imation flash drive quite by accident when our secretary pulled one from stock after I left my previous flash drive an hour's drive from the office. At first I was annoyed by the large size of the device, which is especially true when the carabiner is attached, but I soon attached it directly as a keychain fob, and it has since become my favorite flash drive.

The main factors leading to that preference are the durability of the rubber flash holder (I've broken half a dozen Sandisk Cruzers, mini flip USB drives, Patriot drives, etc.) and this is the first one that is durable enough to live on my key chain. Another factor is that the flash drive itself is small, slotting in easily among a forest of USB cables in front or back panels of the machines I use.

Detaching the thumbdrive from the fob to put it into a machine is a mixed blessing in itself. It makes it easy to leave it attached after having spent a couple of hours debugging some customer's application environment, but it also means that the USB connection isn't carelessly broken off by someone walking past, or just by the weight of the attached keychain. Never the less, I recommend encrypting any sensitive data you might put on the drive since it is quite possible to lose one, but I tend to lose a lot of stuff.

Lastly the drive is big enough, fast enough, and cheap enough for my needs.
Great!!! . Arrived promptly and was just what I ordered. It works very well, no delay when opening files or moving files, has plenty of space for all of my files, the clip is great to carry around at work, the rubber holds the flash drive in securely and I don't have to worry about it falling out. A testament to how well the rubber holds the flash drive, I usually have the Flash Drive clipped to my belt as I work on an ambulance and it has not fallen out once.
Perfect for your key chain . I bought this because I have been looking for a flash drive that I can leave on my key chain and I always have it. Usually with as much as I throw my keys around, the drives break. This one is well encased in rubber and I have had no problems with it. The size is also perfect. I would definitely recommend.
Excellent USB Stick for Keychain Carry . Several years ago I used to own a 1 Gbyte Lexar "jump" drive with a rubber-surround case that works like this one. I just loved it. I had that drive for years without loosing it once or having it malfunction once, with the drive being carried in my pocket on my keychain the whole time. I'm proof this concept works. Lexar stopped making that usb stick. I've never seen a stick since - until this one - that I felt would really last carried in a pocket on a keychain with keys, tools, flashlight, etc.

I'm impressed in every way with this Imation stick!

* The actual stick pops out of the rubber case when you bend the rubber, just like the Jump drive did. That means you don't have your entire keychain attached to your laptop when you plug the stick in, like you would with a pivot usb stick. The rubber is stiff enough, and the "nose" of the stick fits tightly in a rectangular hole in the rubber like the Jump drive did, that there is not much chance the stick would ever come out of the rubber case on its own, not even with a pocket full of stuff. I never once had the Jump drive pop out of its rubber case on its own.

* The USB stick itself is tiny - 1/3 the length of the old Jump drive - so its not going to get caught on things. Length was the one gripe I had about the old Jump drive.

* The software that comes with it works ***great*** to partition the drive in half (or however much you want to use) so that I have one public partition and one private password-protected partition. A 3rd grader could use this software - and probably has. :-) When you first plug the stick in all that is visible is the public partition, which includes a copy of their software. Initially the public partition is set to the full size of the stick. Once you run the software and log in with your password it switches over to the private partion. Stays that way until you do a proper "safe removal" with windows, then its back to the public partition.

The one slight problem is that the rubber case is large, especially at the end where you attach the mini-carabiner, and the carabiner makes it even larger. Using a metal ring or other attachment instead of the carabiner would make it a bit less bulky. The old Jump drive just had a rubber loop instead of the large ring, but then again that loop is the part that wore out every 1.5 years and I had to replace the rubber case (free from Lexar). This one probably won't have that problem.

If you want "rugged" for your keychain, this is your stick! If you want even more rugged, and waterproof, the only thing I'm aware of right now is the aluminum tube "survivor" from Corsair. That thing has a diameter the same as my pocket CR123A cell flashlight and is 50% longer. This drive would be more compact that the survivor, being flat instead of a tube.

My sole regret is the one everybody has after buying a memory stick: I wish I had paid the additional $10 to get the 8GB instead of the 4GB. :-) From the specs they are the same size. Remember that if you partition it in half, public and private, then each partition gets only half the total size.

Cons Review
Confusing illustration of peel off rubber case. Has write protect switch . Having never seen one of these up close, I found the picture of the unit confusing. The black you see is a pliable rubber shroud that completely encloses the drive except for the gray area you see. This makes the unit very water resistant. You have to bend and peel off the rubber in order to remove the drive from its case. The drive itself is minuscule, less than two inches long, and has no hole that would allow you to attach a lanyard.
To me, the drive is way too tiny and susceptible to loss. It does have a blue LED and copied 300 MB of files in about two minutes.
I would have returned it in a heartbeat except for the reason I sought it out. Unlike most drives, it has a tiny read-only write protect dip switch on the side that shields the contents of the drive from malware infection. This feature is not mentioned in the amazon description but does appear on the manufacturer's web site. Access to the switch is recessed and very small. You cannot flip the switch with your fingernail, you must use something like the metal tip of a mechanical pencil to move it. Most users will probably not even notice the switch is there. The Kanguru FlashBlu 2 is another example of a flash drive with a write-protect switch, but it is a bit more expensive.
