IOGEAR (GNS1000120) NAS FTP Server Cable DSL Router SPI Firewire VPN 120GB Hard Drive
This review is from : Iogear NAS FTP SERVER CABLE DSL ROUTER ( GNS1000120 )
OK for simple use; VPN needs lots of work . For all its claims, the BOSS GNS1000120 does about half of them well. The user interface is quite buggy and is not developed properly. Needless to say, I have this unit in service and am somewhat satisfied with its performance. First, the included 120GB drive is a WD model that it reguates according to need; you can set the drive inactivity power down time to what ever you like, and it kicks back on in about 5 seconds if you leave it alone. So, a better choice than an external USB drive that stays on all the time unless you manually power it off and on. The IPSEC portion of the VPN is absolutely horrible. You only get the option of changing the pre-shared key and the remote IP / internal network. No selection available for 3DES/DES, SHA1/MD5, etc, PFS, nothing. Nor is there anywhere in the manuals or online where you can get this information. Also, you cannot specify your own WAN IP as your local identity, causing many other VPN gateways to reject the tunnel! IOGear has no clue as to what I'm talking about and wants me to use PPTP - which may be fine if I were a laptop user, but I want to connect to remote offices gateway to gateway. I have gotten three tunnels to work, and some I just cannot. Steer clear of this unit if you want advanced IPSEC, otherwise it's not bad as far as a PPTP server / Web Server / router / NAS unit.
