no problems for me . I bought this drive in March 2009 after my computer crashed and I lost a lot of data (yes, my own fault). That computer died completely not too long after and I bought a cheap replacement which died two months ago. I now have a new computer with this Fantom drive connected via the USB port, same as with the previous two computers. The drive has worked perfectly with all three computers (first with XP, second with Vista and now with 7). I mainly use it for backing up my huge music collection and photos. I borrowed a computer from work for a few weeks when my second one died in October and I played music files directly from the Fantom drive and they sounded perfect. Never a skip or pause. Since I bought the drive for home/personal use it is fast enough to suit me.

Great Drive! . This is my third Fantom drive (I reached capacity with the other two). I use these drives as backup drives nightly. I have had zero problems with any of them. It has a nice solid case. eSATA makes for very fast transfers.

I wouldn't listen to the others that complain of drive failures. All drives fail (every brand). You should never have just one copy of any of your data. You should also get a copy of SpinRite 6.0. These cases are EZ to get into (there are two screws under a sticker). I opened mine to reroute the LED b/c I felt it was too bright.

All eSATA drives can have issues showing up on occasion. Many times it can be a problem with the OS that can be fixed with the "Disk Management" tool.

Fantom GreenDrive Pro 2 TB USB 2.0/eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive 32 MB Cache with 2 Year Warranty GDP2000EU Opinions
A good backup drive. I recommend it only as a backup drive. . I did not have any problems with this item. One thing that did bug me was the fact that the hard drive spun down and stopped when it was idle for a while. When I tried to access it again it had to spin-up which took about 3-4 secs which can be annoying for some people. It does this because its a green drive. I recommend this only as a backup drive, not a secondary drive. Store your stuff, disconnect it and put it away in a safe place.
Easy to use . This hard drive was easy to set up and use. Has good storage value. Delivery arrived as promised.
good drive. Just works... for a long time. . fantom drives in general are pretty much consistently the best deal out there and this is a classic example of their drives. The only caveat for use on a Mac computer, (which is what I use), is to follow their directions for reformatting before use. If you do follow those directions the entire process should take about five minutes including finding apples disk utility in your utilities folder and reading directions. The rest of the process for use as a usb drive is plug and play. Don't worry if you turn it on in a high noise environment and can't hear it. It is just that quiet. Likewise if you have a working esata connection it is simple plug and play. Another caveat here though... not all esata cards are created equal so if you get this drive first and then get an esata card or adaptor for your mac make sure it works on a mac. My advice on buying a card is get it from amazon and make sure it is direct from amazon because no one else has as good a return policy. I have the newer tech maxpower card and it works like a champ but I went through two 'less expensive' cards that LOOKED like the same spec before I got it. If you have a proper esata set up this drive will show up when turned on or plugged in exactly the same as it would for usb.... only it works a lot faster. Finally there is the reliability factor. I have five fantom drives. Mostly used for backup and data storage. The oldest one was an over five year old 200 gig usb only, which finally died a few days ago. The last couple of years it had been used as a live backup drive so it was on about 8 hours a day three or four days a week. It is the only failure I have seen on fantom drives so far. Delivery is the classic "order it from amazon wait for delivery, get surprised when it shows up early" experience.
Great external 2TB Hard Drive - Very Affordable! . Fantom GreenDrive Pro 2 TB USB 2.0/eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive GDP2000EUI purchased this external hard drive to use primarily to backup my laptop hard drives in case of a system crash. The drive is large enough so I can also store Karaoke music files on this external hard drive and use the hard drive to load Karaoke music from on Karaoke nights.

So far the drive has met and exceeded all my expectations. I have no negatives about this drive. For the price, you can't beat this drive! Even if you had to replace it because of drive failure, you would still only have a nominal amount of monetary outlay to replace a defective unit. If I need another hard drive in the future, I would not hesitate to buy another Fantom external hard drive.

This drive is certified by Microsoft to run on Vista and Windows 7 64-bit operating systems. I have spent a good amount of time researching compatibility with software operating systems I plan to upgrade to in the future. Some product information on websites do not indicate compatibility on a 64-bit operating system, but this particular piece of hardware is compatible with the 64-bit architecture.
Cost-effective functioning USB drive for Mac . I have not used the eSATA connection nor do I intend to - I have it attached to an iMac via USB. However, if you want a cost-effective, reliable 1TB disk that works with a Mac (I'm sure it works with Windows too) this will do it. These drives are slim, easy to work with, quiet, reasonably cool (temperature) and actually reasonably cool (looks). I have four of them attached to USB hubs on my iMac, in two pairs, built into RAID arrays using Disk Utility in Mac OS X and (so far) no problems at all. Of course, I may be tempting fate, but these things sit there quietly and run. I have had a couple of these for over a year, and just bought two more at $100 each.
Works as a server drive. . I bought this for use with a sheevaplug server and can confirm that it works quite nicely. It likes to spin down every minute or so, so I added a cronjob to access the disk every minute to stop this from happening. I run databases, tahoe-lafs, DNS, apache, and a bunch of other stuff on it and the disk works great. I've been running it 24 hours a day for 10 months and it's showing no signs of stopping.Users should note that HDDs crash once in a while and this is to be expected. I believe that this particular product is a vendor-built enclosure containing a Samsung drive.

Cons Review
eSATA connection breaks . First, the bad (so you know right away): As several other reviews have mentioned in various locations, don't count on the eSATA connection working for long. It worked fine for the first few months (I used it just once a week at most to backup my desktop drives). Then, it started working only inconsistently and I had to use the MUCH slower USB 2 connection. Now, the eSATA connection has not worked for a long time. On the good side, it worked very speedily when the eSATA connection on the drive was functional and I haven't had any complaints about the drive itself. It's just I would have bought a different and even pricier setup so that I could have used the eSATA interface. I wouldn't recommend this drive if you want to use the eSATA connection on the drive.
Do not buy . I'll try to avoid repeating the common complaints leading to the failure of this drive: rattling death sound, inability to find files, etc. I'll also briefly mention the frustrations trying to contact Fantom's customer service: three e-mails and three phone calls with no reply until I finally, miraculously, reached someone on my forth phone attempt. And finally, the $45 flat diagnostic charge with no guarantee of data recovery, despite the fact that my drive failed within four months of purchase. And you foot the shipping as well. Rather than provide the company with another drive to refurbish and re-sell, while being stuck with a product that would most likely fail within six months, I decided to do my own diagnostic work.

These drives are not meant to be taken apart by anyone without the proper tools; that is to say, there were no easy screws to get the drive out of the shell. But, with enough application, it happened. And to my surprise, when I removed the external from the shell, was a giant Western Digital sticker plastered on the drive.

Western Digital has notorious USB problems and drive failures. When I researched external hard drives before deciding on the Fantom, I consciously decided not to buy Western Digital. They seemed to have a one-in-four failure rate. So I was pretty peeved when I discovered that I had inadvertently bought one.

Money is tight for most and when relatively expensive products fail on a regular basis, it breeds frustration. I am deeply frustrated with my external hard drive situation. I spent good money on a product that I feel, deceived me. The customer service response was less than stellar and their ability to help felt sub-par. I cannot, under any circumstances, recommend this product to anyone. If you do/have purchased one and it hasn't failed, consider yourself lucky. Otherwise, avoid at all costs.
