Knowing how to install, configure, and troubleshoot a computer network is a highly marketable and exciting skill. This book first introduces the fundamental building blocks that form a modern network, such as protocols, topologies, hardware, and network operating systems. It then provides in-depth coverage of the most important concepts in contemporary networking, such as TCP/IP, Ethernet, wireless transmission, and security. After reading the book and completing the end-of-chapter exercises, you will be prepared to select the best network design, hardware, and software for your environment. You will also have the skills to build a network from scratch and maintain, upgrade, and troubleshoot an existing network. Finally, you will be well prepared to pass CompTIA's (the Computing Technology Industry Association's) Network+ certification exam. This book explains concepts logically and in a clear, approachable style. In addition, concepts are reinforced by real-world examples of networking issues from a professional's standpoint. Each chapter opens with an On the Job story from a network engineer. These real-world examples, along with Hands-on Projects and Case Projects in each chapter, make this book a practical learning tool. The numerous tables and illustrations, along with the glossaries, appendices, and study questions make the book a valuable reference for any networking professional Email or call for expedited shipping

Satisfactory but could do better . This book was used in my course to study for the Network+ certification exam. The book is satisfactory and does come with a free Certblaster CD, but I've noticed a few problems that just made the book difficult to digest.

1. The book is wordy so what could take 5 words to explain will definately take one or two paragraphs.

2. Some of the official answers to the review questions are wrong (we found a definate mistake on one of the subnetting IP answers). Our teacher also tended to disagree with several of the answers which made us question the accuracy of the information we were reading.

3. On a plus, the graphics were nice and if you buy the international edition (like I did), it is much cheaper and is no different from the US version (except for price).

4. Certblaster is a free test simulator that came with the book to help prepare for the actual exam. I found several problems with Certblaster and when I contacted the software company, discovered that the book is using a beta version. This beta version does count some correct answers as wrong and the OSI model wouldn't take any answer as correct. Since my instructor used Certblaster as part of our final grade, there was no way anyone could make a 100% on the test. Personally, I use RealExam because the questions are harder and more closly match the kinds of questions asked on the certification exam.

To summarize, the book does teach the fundamentals of Networking and I'm sure it will prepare anyone adequately for the certification exam but it does need to have a few mistakes corrected and I'm sure there are better books out there. Many of us students studied the summary at the end of the chapters rather than try to read through the chapter itself. I give the book a grade of C.
