Super easy installation but don't expect much speed . We actually own the 250GB version of this product, but I figured performance would be about the same.

Between my wife and I, we've got six computers. Three PCs and three Macs, two of which are G4 laptops using 802.11g. Keeping a centralized "vault" of MP3s and JPEGs gets to be a real pain in the keister.

This dedicated Network Attached Storage (NAS) device makes it super easy. I was trying to decide whether or not to resurrect an old Athlon 1900XP to act as a dedicated file server (using Red Hat or what not), bringing our net total of operational machines to 7. I decided that spending 317 bucks on a 250GB NAS device was worth it.

Five minutes after coming home with the product, I had it up and running. Ten minutes after that, I had all six computers set-up to use the NAS.

Don't expect miracles from this product. Its not very quick. Copying large amounts of files to it will bog down your network, especially if doing it wirelessly (802.11B, G or N). If the drive is being written to AND read from at the same time, you'll really tax the NAS...not unlike any P-ATA or S-ATA internal drive.

I'm disappointed that WD only offers this product with 10/100bT instead of 10/100/1000, since our house is wired for gigabit. Still, at this price, I'm not THAT disappointed. The drive is super quiet, easy to use, doesn't require fans to keep cool and, as far as I know, does NOT utilize proprietary protocols to connect to Macs and PCs.

Oh...and it does play nice with Macs and PCs both. I docked it a star for not having 1000bT.

Super Quiet Fast Setup Wants to Network Fabulous Hard Drive . I have five computers (2 wifi), printers, Tivo on my network. Setup took seconds; I've added an external drive (not netcenter) to it thru the USB port in no time, and even that drive networks! Access photos video music from any machine and the Tivo Series 2- Listen to music with your surround sound system using the network drive! I don't think you can run it just on a computer thru the USB though, it has to go thru the router (WiFi is fine) using ethernet cable (provided) and then it appears in windows as a network drive after you run the cd setup on that computer (it's very simple). It is fast enough for video, and I have not had any speed problems. Very highly recommend!

Easy Network Access . The claim of cool operation is true. I've had the drive for 2 weeks now, have never turned it off and it remains cool to the touch unlike a lot of external USB drives. I haven't tried to connect a printer off of it yet but that's next.

The drive is not lightning fast (didn't expect it to be) since it's competing for network resources with your other network devices but performance is acceptible. I have 4 PCs. The setup was as fast as connecting the drive to the network, powering it up and installing the software on each PC. So pleased with this product, I'm ordering a 250GB version as well. 4 stars due to speed limitations
Don't pass this one up! . I bought this item a couple of years ago and am about to outgrow it. So far I can't find anything as good with more memory. If I could get this exact product with 500GB or 1TB, I would jump at it. I have upgraded through 2 PCs and have a home network with 3 laptops (kids), and I've only ever needed this external network hard drive. The fact that is has a print server and made wireless printing possible for me long before my friends ever heard of it was a big plus...
Fabulous drive . I've had this drive for over 6 months and it's been FABULOUS! I've attached my Canon USB printer to it and it works great. Setup was fast and easy and the drive operates cool and fast! Sharing the printer is just like sharing any other network resouce, but since I never turn the WD drive or my wireless router off, the shared drive and my printer are always available from any computer on my LAN.
The LINUX kernel provides a basic level of security and privacy (username and password) so everyone has their own personal folder.
Wonderfully easy . Just got this drive setup for drive letter access on 2 computers and it was a breeze. Software was super simple, but has enough functionality to do whatever you could probably want to do with it.
WDXE1600JBN works good even easier than expected . I bought a Western Digital WDXE1600JBN 160GB Net Center External Hard Drive several weeks ago and it is a breeze to use. I have since added two more computers to my home network and installing the provided software was not even necessary - the folders i had previously created on the WDXE1600JBN automatically appeared under My Network Places. File transfers to and from the drive itself are fast enough for me to believe that the speed is limited to the capabilities of my in-home wireless network, not the drive. The original reason for getting the drive was to serve as a backup and transfer device for data I had on two Win98SE machines, but using it has been so easy it is now used for file sharing across all machines. Even the wife and kid have their own share folders they can get to from anywhere!
