Toshiba 2TB External Drive USB 3.0; Fast. . I've tested several external 2-3TB, USB 3.0 hard drives over the past month, and for various reasons (VCD, USB 3.0 issues, etc) have set aside all but this one. Testing was performed on a Dell 7400 workstation running XP SP3.
This drive worked immediately out of the box, no intrusive VCD, no formatting problems, and partitioned easily into two approximately equal logical drives. USB 3.0 Transfers from the internal hard drive to this drive indicated write speeds of 39-51 MB/sec for single 1GB and 4GB video files. Multiple files (1800 files totaling 1GB) were understandably slower at about 26MBsec. Read speeds back to the computer were slower. The only nit-picking quibble I might have is the very bright(!) activity indicator on the front panel, but this minor point does not detract from the functionality of the product.
Reliability is the next issue, and this review will be updated if anything untoward occurs within the next few months.

Easy to use needs reformatting to us with a Mac . This hard drive was very easy to use with my mac after I reformatted it to my operating system. It was slightly frustrating as the packaging says it is possible but gives no instructions on how to do it, and neither does the online product help page. By googling "how to reformat an external hard drive for mac" I was able to find a message board that discussed this topic. It took the third of the suggested options to reformat, but after this (which only took about 10 minutes) the hard drive was drag and drop ready. Files transfer quickly and are easily indexed. A great value for the money!

no unnecessary software . I am so used to receiving external hard drives with unnecessary software, drives and programs that i was completely shocked when i plugged it in and it was ready to use within 5 seconds. This is exactly what an external hard drive should be, the only thing preloaded on the drive is two .pdf documents that can be deleted anytime you want. I have just received the drive, but so far backups have worked flawlessly and i cannot recommend this drive enough.

well after initial misunderstanding- it works as expected . The Toshiba 1TB HD was easy to install (thank you for not adding any software application) and it just simply works. Although it is USB 3, I am using at at the 2-mode, since my computer and USB hub are USB 2- but it is fast, quite and looking good on my deask. I use it mainley for backup of work files and pictures.The hard drive had arrived but could not be operated.
I returned and requested replacement. The logistics was painless and really efficient! In a few days I got a new 1TB HD, no questions asked.
I think I now understand what happend, so don't fall into the same trap as I did:
The light indicator (which is on the opposite side of the switch, I guess you can call it the front) doesn't come on until the unit is plug into the main, the USB cable is connected AND your computer is NOT in a sleep mode. The HD comes alives (indicator light on) only when you talk to it...Bottom line- in spite of the initial misunderstanding- I like it. It works!

Toshiba External Hard Drive 1 TB . Excellent and very easy to use. I'd gotten 2 from Dell a couple years ago and neither of them worked with my Dell computer. Dell Tech Support couldn't get them to work either. I ordered the Toshiba because I have a lot of photographs, etc I don't want to risk losing. It was extremely easy to hook up and even easier to use. All I do is turn it on, click "send to" and click on the Toshiba icon. Couldn't be any easier!
Excellent drive . This drive is almost silent, very fast (uses a usb 3 connection well), good looking and stable in its stand. It can also be laid flat if that is preferred. Cables are long enough for a reasonable connection. It also has a solid on/off switch. I can't speak to it's longevity as I just purchased it a week ago, but if stability and silence contribute to longevity (and in my experience, they often do), I look forward to enjoying it for quite some time.
Dave's Opinion . This product is well designed and constructed; my idea of exactly what I wanted. I bought two of these drives, and would recommend the drive to anyone.
Works great . I use for archive. Very easy to hook up and manage. I have owned it for about 2 months and I have no complaints.
Very Happy . So far so good. Toshiba is one of the few companies that offer 3-year warranty.

Cons Review
DOA . I got this item and it powered up OK once. The blue power lite came on and then I turned it off because I wasn't going to use it right away.....but the same day I wanted to transfer some files and now it won't power up. I tried a different outlet and got the same thing and the computer doesn't show it connected like it did before when the power button worked. Not sure if it's the transformer or the unit though.I'm sure it's a good external HD if it works....I had to write this review since many folks factor in reliability of a produce when making their choice.I should note that Amazon makes it easy to return items and would give them 5 stars for their return policy and ease of shipping options. However they didn't give me back all my money....they had a re-stocking fee.
