G-raid 2TB . I ordered this drive thinking that it was RAID 1 compatible, but I was totally wrong and should have read the description better (my fault). None the less this product was rock solid and is great. I would definitely recommend this for those who are in the market for a kick-ass RAID 0 drive. It's built like a tank and fast.

So good - I'm buying another one! . I've worked in the photo production field for quite a while and have come across problems with almost any kind of harddrive - except for this one. At this point, I own three different G-Drives that are all awesome. Solid design, work great with my mac (they even match visually) and rock solid performance.
There's only one thing I don't like: the larger drives that use their own power sources won't turn off or go to sleep mode if you turn off or put your computer to sleep, so to get rid of the fan noise, you have to eject and turn them off every time you're done working. The models that get their power through the firewire cables don't have that issue - they go to sleep with the computer.
However - that's truly a minor issue (and one I think many of the larger harddrives have, regardless of brand).
I would recommend this brand of drive to anybody - and so would most of the photographers I work with.

Very fast but noisy as hell . i bought 2 months ago and i am very happy with the purchase.
when i first installed it , i use to plug it with a firewire 800 conection, but i decided to use my expresscard34 for my macbook pro and now i am using the e-sata port. seems faster.
the negative side of the product is noise. i never used a hard drive so noisy like this. some times annoying. i don't know if is the cooler or the drive itself.
cheers

Steady workhorse . I've been using this hard drive for over a year and use it 3-4x per week, often with 8-10 hours of use. I have nothing negative to say about the drive. It's reliable and solid. It's traveled with us on business trips and been used to edit HD video without a hitch. Great product in my book!
Excellent desktop back-up . Excellent Drive.
I use this drive with one partition for Apple's Time Machine back-up and one partition for storage. It's reliable and effortless.

Cons Review
Buyer BEWARE! . I've owned about 10 GRaid drives over the past few years. I thought it was just me.....nearly a 75% failure rate.
I purchased two new Graid Gen4 2tb drives in October 2010. One drive was totally dead, DOA, right out of the box.
GTech informed me today that "We no longer repair drives." Oh. Maybe they were thinking something else, but that really gives me pause about customer service and warranty reliablility.
Need further proof? Simply go to www.creativecow.com and look under FORUMS. There you will find one for GTech. Man you will get an eye full! "Now my 2nd GRAID is failing!" "Lost all data, HELP!" "Drive won't mount". "Power button won't work." "Drive makes strange noises". And my favorite, "Are all GTech drives really bad, or is it just me?"
Nope, it isn't "just you". I've had the president of GTech call me and replace ALL of my GRAID drives because I raised such a stink about the lousy quality and the failure rate. At that time, I had 3 or 4 drives fail in a year--one only 9 months new, and the replacement RMA drive failing after 30 days!
Now this....2 new drives, purchased here through Adorama (which I hold totally blameless) and one of them is totally dead. According to GTech, my only option is to return the drive to Adorama and have them ship me another drive--with no assurances that it will work, either.
I would love to really believe in or trust GTech, but no longer. As soon as I can afford it, I will replace my 4 (hopefully) running GRaid drives with another manufacturer.
I'm not a nut. I don't have my video editing suite located over power lines, or an ancient Indian burial ground. They are in an air conditioned room with superb ventilation. But they don't last. They don't work. They fail, and have cost me countless hours of tears and headaches as I try to rebuild my video projects.
I'm now living in terror that the one GRaid I just bought will fail any moment--just read the Creative Cow blogs if you don't believe me.

Awaiting exchange; mine randomly dismounts. . I purchased mine a month ago to hold my sample library (I'm a composer and have roughly 1TB so far of virtual instrument libraries).
During the second week, I noticed a "Device Removal!" error (meaning, the drive had unexpectedly disconnected from the Mac); I figured it was a fluke. But last night, it did this three times, during a big read operation. Hideous. Specifically, I was opening a project that used a number of orchestral instruments, and the G-Tech drive dismounted in the middle of their loading process. OUCH.
I've taken the exchange route this time, but if the replacement drive exhibits the same behavior, I'm getting a refund and moving on. (Up to now, I've gotten most of my audio-purposed drives from Other World Computing and had pretty good luck - one failure in I think 8 years.)
G-Tech cannot advertise this drive as suitable for A/V/Digital Media work -- or much of anything else, really -- if this is how it performs. I'll report back after I get my replacement.

Fail . I've had this for a year. Used it about 3-4 a month to back up pictures, videos and music. Rest of the time kept it off. While it would mount inconsistently with my iMac, all in all worked well. Until last week when the power wouldn't come on. Checked power source. Even bought a new power adapter ($24...not cheap). Still no light. Contacted customer service who replied that it "sounds like the controller board in your drive is bad." What that means is that I need to send to a data rescue site to retrieve my data THEN ship to them (on my own dime) for a replacement. Why would I want a replacement when it isn't reliable the first time?!?
It's really simple, external drives are meant as data vaults to protect against losing your files. Nothing more. It can't do that, it's worthless. So the report on this product is simply this: FAILED.

G-Tech: horrendous customer service . My 1TB G-Tech device lasted about 8 months. The first time I called they said they would send out a new power brick, even though it's 'green' light was on. After two weeks, a new power brick arrives, and surprise, no difference. 2nd operator knew it was the mother board by the way the device performed. Kicker is, you have to send in the defective unit first, at your expense. I've been without a back-up device for almost two months. The company is now owned by Hitachi.
They can't/won't give me an estimated time when a new device will be delivered.
Stick with Seagate or Western Digital.

Devastating . I received it in a timely manner and immediately started using it. It was fast, and was great until 4 days later when I had tons of files on it, the drive failed!! Lost everything! Took it to a data recovery service where they looked at it and told me it wasn't due to the drive being corrupted, but it was due to a DRIVE FAILURE and would cost about $1500.00 to recover my files!
