The MiniPro™ FireWire 800, USB 3.0 portable hard drive features a unique aluminum body engineered to effectively dissipate heat and provide rugged portability. With an impressive combination of FireWire 800 and USB 3.0, the MiniPro can be powered from the FireWire or USB connection — or powered using the included power adapter.
The MiniPro is equipped with the industry's best Oxford chipset, which is approved by many professional Audio/Video hardware and software manufacturers. The rugged aluminum housing provides protection due to impact and drops, while acting as a heatsink for passive, silent cooling. The USB 3.0 port is backward compatible with all USB 2.0 ports allowing for maximum cross-compatibility with existing computers. Finally, the HDD spin-down feature ensures efficient operation by reducing power consumption. When your computer enters sleep mode, the hard drive spins down to minimize power consumption. The hard drive spins up automatically when the host system wakes up.

great for storage low power / heat . I ordered two of these from the manufacturer to replace my 3.5 inch 1TB storage. I am trying to minimize hardware and power consumption.
The build quality is very high.
The drive is quiet and doesn't put out much heat at all. It got a little hot when I was transferring 1TB of data to it. But under normal operation it only gets slightly warm.
It plays 1080p movies fine.
The manufacturer page lists the exact hard drive that is inside of it:
[...]
I read reviews for the Toshiba drive it uses. The drive rates very high for sustained throughput (up to 100MBps), but falls behind a bit for random access. So basically this drive is good for storage, video playback, and large transfers.
It is also bus powered which is nice. And it has a 2xUSB->DC adapter so you can turn two extra USB ports on your computer into external power for the drive. I use this adapter to provide extra power to the second one on my FW800 chain just to ensure it has enough power, though it probably isn't necessary.

MiniPro 1TB External FireWire 800, USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive Reviews
MiniPro 1TB External 2.5-in FireWire 800/400 . Arrived on time (Prime). Fantastic drive. Fast transfer rates.
Did I say fast?
Built very well. Solid!
Using on iMac to do complete backups for off site storage. Can keep multiple sets.
Can carry in jacket pocket.
Use the FireWire 800 connection.
Have had no problems with it (had for a couple of months).
Has short FireWire cable (about 18 inches) but that works perfectly for me since I have the iMac right there.
Specially nice since it frees up USB port.
Must have for FireWire enabled systems.

MiniPro 1TB External FireWire 800, USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive Opinions
ditto: great for storage low power / heat . I bought this directly from Oyen Digital. I could repeat the review by the other guy except I didn't check what HD it actually uses.It looks much sexier than my older OWC drive although the latter is probably less prone to scratches and such (metal vs plastic). I am 100% happy with both OWC and Oyen.Let me add: great customer service. Highly recommended.Addendum on March 27, 2011. No scratches whatsoever. Getting ready to buy my second identical drive...Addendum on November 10, 2011. I see there are some rather negative reviews. So let me point out that mine still works perfectly.

Perfect but does get hot . I'm just writing to say that this drive is everything I was looking for.
It's light, 1tb, and blazing fast.
However some other members were saying that the drive never gets hot, but if you are editing off of it, it will get hot. Likewise any operation that constantly uses the drive will allow it to gain sufficient heat.

Great Product! . Works great with my mac( I did have to format the drive for mac first but thats no big deal, they have step-by-step instruction for this on their website if you don't know how). Very fast transfers even when using the USB port and I was transferring large HD files. The ac adaptor is not included though, it's sold separately but you can get one from amazon for as little as 5 bucks, so not a big issue really. I will definitely be buying from Oyen Digital in the future. If your looking for a quality drive then this is it!
Not what I expected . On Mac Mini seems to be just as buggy as the USB drives. It hangs, sometimes very slow, it's getting disconnected ...
I wanted this to work well, especially after reading other reviews.

Cons Review
1 of the 2 FW800 ports died within a month . I bought this drive based of the superb reviews, and it's the smallest buspowered drive with Firewire 800 interface, and with 2 ports for daisy chaining another Firewire 800 device. The drive was fast and reliable, however one of the 2 FW800 ports died yesterday, it scared me a bit coz I thought the drive itself died and I haven't completed my initial Backblaze backup of this external drive yet. When I connect this drive with the faulty FW800 port, the drive spins up, and spins right back down. Sounds almost like the drive was dying. But using the other FW800 port it works consistently. I can't daisy chain with this anymore coz that obviously requires both FW800 ports working.
So back to Amazon it goes, gladly this happened on the 29th day, so I was able to just return in instead of having to deal with warranty.
I've replaced it temporary with a 1TB G-Drive I found on Craigslist in brand new conditions. I need to get another 1TB buspowered portable drive with FW800, and I'm unsure about getting another Oyen Digital one, so now I'm back to looking for the perfect portable drive. (took me a long time to decide on this one).
