Fast data transfer and very long battery life . Bottom line: You put the card in, press the button, the contents are copied to the device hard drive. It's fast, easy to use, and reliable.
I use a portable media reader/storage device for one thing - to backup a card as soon as I remove it from my camera. The backup happens with the drive in my pocket and I've already put another card in my camera and resumed shooting while the backup is underway. I have also been looking for something that is fast enough to gather images from other photographers at the end of an event.
Until now I wasn't able to find a drive that was fast enough or ran long enough to always be able to handle both "wants". I'm glad I had the opportunity to review this drive because it is ideal for both purposes.
Transfer Rates and Battery Life:
To measure transfer rate I started with a fully charged drive and used two cards; an 8 GB Sandisk Extreme III and an Sandisk Extreme III CF. Each card was loaded with the same 1 GB mix of JPGs, raw files, and a few video clips. (Turns out it doesn't matter what you have on the cards, it will copy any kind of file. It even maintains any folder structure from the inserted media card.)
It took 35 seconds to transfer the 1GB of stuff from the CF card and 80 seconds to copy from the SD card. To put it another way, you get 28.7 MB/sec from the CF card and 12.7 MB/sec from the SD. (It's the cards, not the drive. There's a reason those expensive cameras still use the bigger cards :) )
To measure battery life and the amount you can transfer on a single charge I started with a full battery and counted how many times the drive could copy the contents of 1 GB of data from my SD card. Each "pass" was always the same. I turned on the drive, spent about 5 seconds navigating to the "Copy media to drive" option, the copy ran for a consistent 80 seconds, and then the drive ran for 30 more seconds before it powered off by itself. I was able to do this 72 times before it ran out of juice.
What are the results you ask. Well, the obvious one is that with 1 GB of data on the model SD card I was using you can copy 72 GB before needing to recharge. However, because there is time spent with the disk spinning but "not copying" before and after on each pass, and because CF cards transfer faster than SD cards, you can get more data transferred by having more of it each time and by using faster media. Below is a summary of what the total transfer amounts would have been with amounts of data on the media I used. Faster media would have yielded even more impressive results. (Write me if you want more details and/or to see something a bit more nicely formatted):
Amount of data (GB) - SD card - CF card
1 - 72 - 118
2 - 85 - 158
4 - 93 - 189
8 - 98 - 210
There is one thing that is worth noting from the test I ran where I was able to read 1 GB of data from a SD card 72 times on a charge. If you add the time before and after the actual transfer where the disk was still spinning it comes to 2.3 hours which is very close to the manufacturers spec's. (It's nice that what they claim is what you can expect.)
Other things I liked:
- The interface is simple - one button that you can press and lever up or down.
- The display is clear and provides an abundance of useful information. At a glance you know how much battery and space is left, the status of your previous transfer, and the status of any transfer that is currently underway.
- You have the option to either copy of "copy and verify" when reading from media.
- The device identifies media that had been previously read. You get the option to import a new copy, verify the media against the copy that is already there, or delete what's on the media.
- There is a optional external battery pack so you can run the thing even after the internal battery dies.
- The internal drive is easily replaced with anything that's 2.5" and SATA. This becomes real interesting when the price of SSDs drops.

Nexto Di Digital Photo Storage ND2730 500gb Reviews
Perfect . I have to agree with the review by Mr. Rojas. I received my unit yesterday. I charged the battery, updated the firmware to V1.03 and the unit was ready for use. It took 4 minutes and 30 seconds to copy 8 GB from one SanDisk Extreme Pro CF card to the ND2730 and another 4 minutes to verify the data. I then copied the 8 GB of raw files from the ND2730 to my computer in less than five minutes.
I waited for over a year to purchase this unit since other devices on the market were either not reliable or very expensive or had a very small capacity. This unit beats anything else on the market for price, transfer speed, and reliability.

Nexto Di Digital Photo Storage ND2730 500gb Opinions
Finally a portable HDD backup solution that can read my CF cards! . I received this today in the main and opened it as if today was Christmas morning. After opening the initial shipping box, I noticed that the ND2730 was in a very nicely setup large package, complete witha see-through plastic window. -- In short, very good for a customer presentation of this unit.
Diving right in, I noticed that it was already charged! Powered on the unit, it was already preformatted (500GB with ~ 460GB available), and ready to go. Now the heat of the moment. I popped in my Kingston ultimate 600x CF card, which was previously not readable in the Sanho Colorspace UDMA 500GB unit that I just sold on Ebay and.... after crossing fingers--- errored out on the attempted read :(
Ok... digging in through the paperwork, I noticed that it recommended to upgrade to the latest firmware on their website, so I thought, why not? After attempting to login to their site nextodiusa dot com, no luck on finding their firmware-- it just had their product brochures. So on to the main site in Korea nextodi dot com. After finding the link to change everything from Korean to English, I found the link to their firmware-- The latest as of 09/14/11 is version 1.03; I checked the unit, and it reported 1.02. So downloaded the file, put it on the HDD via FW800 connection, ran the update process (which took a total of 30 seconds) and attempt #2 of the CF card copy....... SUCCESS!!
<begin angelic music playing in background and beaming light displaying on the Nexto DI ND2730 unit!)
In short, after the firmware upgrade, this unit is very awesome, definitely touches upon all that I'm looking for-- Portable CF card backup solution when on the go without having the need to bring a laptop or netbook! It also supports USB 2.0 and Firewire 800 (Firewire is awesome, since it's FFFAAAAASSST!!! on transferring the files to my Macbook Pro and Mac Pro in the blink of an eye.
PROS:
- Great for photographers who like to travel light
- After firmware update to v 1.03, able to read Kensington Ultimae 600x CF cards (as well as other CF cards with UDMA-enabled microcontrollers)
- Very simple to use and intuitive menu interface-- up, down, short-button and long-button press along with beeping confirmation
- Comes with OK protective case and FW and USB cables
- Firewire 800 support! And its faaassstt!!
- Simple preview function to view most pictures in JPG and RAW format!
CONS:
- Small screen (maybe for power savings?)
- Theres two stickers on the case that are marked "void if removed"-- On a relatively dark case, the stickers are bright WHITE and stick out like a sore thumb--- Place on the leather cover and most of it is hidden.
- No way to replace battery without opening case and voiding 2-year warranty-- Need to bring into a Nexto DI dealer? for repair
- No 3rd party cases (i.e. better quality silicone cases) available
In Short:
- Glad I made the purchase, this is definitely fitting to my needs. If you are looking for a solution that did what the Sanho Colorspace UDMA Hyperdrive promised but didn't, then this is definitely what you're looking for!
