LaCie 80GB Drive -- Great Deal . while finishing my master treatise in 2003 i purchased a LaCie 30GB external HD for backup and found its convenience and reliability wonderful. now that i'm on to bigger and hopefully better things, i needed more storage to backup my "digital life" and this drive was the answer. its sleeker than my 30GB, runs silently, and its design is unobtrusive. you can place it in most office or home environments and it is really quite unnoticeable. i backup lots of photo and music data, and its very quick due to the firewire connection. amazon has a much better price than most, and for the storage space the price can't be beat. if you need a light, highly portable, roomy HD for storing large chunks of data, this is it. of all the portable HD manufacturers, i think LaCie is the best. you can't go wrong here.

LaCie 80GB Portable External Hard Drive with Firewire and USB 2.0 Interface (300765) Reviews
So far so good . I have been using this hard drive for more than two weeks now. So far it works perfectly. It is very light to carry around. It can be powered by computer through USB or firewire. I also have an old mobile hard drive from Lacie (similar in look except 40G and only firewire connection). It has been working fine with me for more than 1.5 years. That is why I am buying the second one.

LaCie 80GB Portable External Hard Drive with Firewire and USB 2.0 Interface (300765) Opinions
older computers may not be able to run this drive . the drive works great in my mac with firewire. It doesn't work in a dell latitude with 2 standard USBs and a 4-pin firewire. The problem is that it doesn't have enough power to draw from the USB ports.

LaCie Portable Hard Drive Review . This is my third LaCie product and I'm absolutely satisfied with all of them. Not one second of problems with any of them. Good value.
Great on the go drive . I got this drive when it was the king of the castle. 4 years later i still use it for my data needs, whether its just transferring video files or backing up. it does the job. and the firewire 400, which at the time of purchase was top notch, still is a handy thing to have.
Lacie good but i worry . I know that there are MANY reviews AGAINST getting this drive BUT we have this drive at work and for the size and capacity it just fits what i want. :(
I'm trying to make certain that I do keep regular weekly backups. It's been over a month for me and there have been NO issues. I use it on a mac PowerBook so firewire and a mac format is how i use it. It's holding all my "walk-about" photos and music. I do have an issue with the firewire cable falling out of the port from time to time but i think thats all the port's size. I gotta loose port.. ;)
I have no other complaints so I hope I get to stay part of the group who never has an issue with the drive. It's great bc it's so compact. Fits snug within a sub flap in my photo/compu bag. and bc i don't need an external power cord, I don't have to worry about finding space for it. It's only 80 gigs, but like i mentioned this is walk-about space so with 20 gigs-for my itunes and my 60gig ipod- of music, the rest for images. I'm doing ok. :) I take a lot of pictures in RAW so i didn't want to fill my laptop hdd with images. So i choose the ext option.
i hope this was helpful.

Cons Review
Failed Twice . Over a year ago, I purchased the 40GB model and was very happy with it until a couple months ago when it died. Thankfully I had a recent backup. I thought it was just a bad coincidence that my drive had failed, so I got the 80GB model as a replacement. Now, after having it for less than two months, the drive completely stopped working. I have tried everything and cannot get a computer to read the disk.
I really want to like this drive. It is beautiful, easy to use, and otherwise worthy of 5 stars, but having two drives fail in the past two months is absolutely unacceptable. If you get this drive, make sure to backup your data constantly.

simply bad choice! . I purchased the 80Gb drive last year attracted by good reviews and having my old Lacie 20Gb reliably working for several yrs already.
But apparently times changed for LaCie. After 18 mos the 80Gb drive is completely dead, cannot be powered up at all. Since new AC adapter did not help and disk warranty is expired, the data will be lost.
The LaCie's technical support turned out totally useless, they keep recommending to re-format the drive ... how can one do it without switching it on? no idea ..

Computer cannot recognize hard drive . Here's an excerpt of an email I sent LaCie:
"I would like to report a problem, I believe you have known about for quite sometime. This is only the second time I am connecting my external hard drive to my computer and, while the orange light turns on, my computer cannot recognize the hardware. I have not taking it anywhere, the cable is not damaged, and the hardware has never been poorly handled. I think it is despicable that you keep the Porsche line on the market, knowing all of the failures the products have...."
