Great NAS . Have the TS-659 Pro for around 2 weeks now. This is a great NAS. I put 5 Samsung 2TB drives in RAID 6, and things are running smoothly. This is my first NAS, so I have nothing to compare to. But it was very easy to setup and the Qnap forum helps a lot too. Performance is not as good as I expected from reviews (I am getting only 30MB/sec write and ~40MB/sec read), but maybe it's due to the RAID 6 setup and I am using Cat5 cables (just ordered some Cat6 cables from Amazon). Will see what the performance will be with new cables.
QNAP Pro 6-Bay Desktop Network Attached Server TS-659 Reviews
All the features work great.. except RAID expansion . I have tested almost every feature on the RAID. Some just for fun. My day job is working with networks and servers. This device is really flexible for the home or small office. In my testing put a bunch of data on a four disk RAID. I then tried the RAID expansion to replace the disk with larger disks. The process worked until the last drive. The disk would not replace properly. So I rebuilt the RAID and replaced in a different order. Again the last replace would not work. I then tried putting the old drive back into the RAID and the RAID was completely lost. THIS MEANS I WOULD HAVE LOST ALL THE DATA. So... I say this as a reminder. ALWAYS have a full backup before doing any RAID changes. This has been the case in the past.. and this device has not changed my opinion about that. Hopefully an update to the unit will allow this to work properly either way.
QNAP Pro 6-Bay Desktop Network Attached Server TS-659 Opinions
QNAP Pro 6-Bay Desktop NAS TS-659 . Is the product worth the money? Yes -- no doubt in my mind. I have and use the smaller NAS products that use 2 disks and find them slow and limiting. I installed the QNAP product on Monday and as of early this morning (Wednesday) I have all my home systems backed-up including my 50,000+ RAW digital photos. I was very organized before so it was mostly copying directories and running my backup system to create current disk images (ready for a recovery). But, that means that I put 2156.45 GB on the QNAP. I started Monday night by doing a single disk backup. When that worked I worked through the next three disks (starting them manually), and then copied directories. There was down time because I wasn't sitting at the keyboard ready to start the next transfer. Oh, and I should mention that I verified all disk images and directory copies. In other words, without impacting my regular life I spent Tuesday backing up and am done. I run a gig-e home newtork and had no problems.

Installation was very easy and I accepted the defaults in most cases.

Good product, it works. If I have problems I'll post. Until then, I really couldn't be happier.
The best gets better...(linux kernel 2.6.33 and more!) . I liked the QNAP Pro 4-Bay Desktop Network Attached Server TS-459 that I was able to justify the purchase a second array pretty easily. Purchasing the TS-659 enabled me to put the advice from the review I did for the TS-459 into action. Namely, I purchased 2x2TB drives (the excellent Western Digital 2 TB RE4 SATA 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Enterprise Hard Drive WD2003FYYS products) and then proceeded to rebalance/reconfigure my arrays to what I should have done the first time. Now I have a very dense, very economical 4-bay system with 5.5TB of storage, and a very flexible 6-bay system with 5x1TB drives that can be expanded with a 6th 1TB drive or enhanced from RAID5 to RAID6, depending on what needs I have in the future.

But what I really want to rave about is the progress that the folks at QNAP are making on their software, which is astonishing. In just 6 weeks time, QNAP has enhanced their software from version 3.2.7 to version 3.3.0, and I have to say that the new UI is much improved. Everything from the System Information page to the Resource Monitor view has been improved with more detailed, useful information, and also more real-time information. According to the QNAP forums, the 3.3.0 release was much delayed in an effort to get NFSv4 support, and while that specific feature did not make the cut, it's obvious that a huge amount of other great work did make it through their QA and release process.

I should also say that the QNAP community forums are a valuable part of the product as well. Community members are helpful, polite, and knowledgeable, and their collective knowledge enhances this otherwise outstanding product.
Great NAS . Easy to configure, up and running within minutes.

I'm already eager to get my next Q-Nap.
