MY FAVORITE DRIVE EVER... . i have owned countless harddrives and lacie always pulls through for general use. i am a traveling musician and need instant access to all my music files, photoshop files, photos, and documents. i record music on analog tape but sometimes i record to harddrives, in which case we use Glyph drives with 200gb or less.
for personal computer use this little baby is #1... i was able to fit the data of my 4 personal drives onto it so now i have everything in one place. plus, the speed of FW800 is a must for big files.
with FW800 there is no need to plug this drive into a power outlet - this is called bus power. very handy for the traveler.
dont think twice, get it!

LaCie Little Big Disk Quadra 1 TB eSATA/Firewire400/Firewire800/USB 2.0 7200rpm Portable External Hard Drive 301398U Opinions
After many hours of research . This is my first product review for Amazon; however, I've been ordering from Amazon since June 1997. I've never been compelled to write a review about a product before. Not that they haven't been warranted; however, I spent more time researching external hard drives than any other product I've purchased. I just bought a new Mac Book Pro after many years of frustration with a PC that crashed 3 times, losing all of my files. I knew I was going to buy a Mac, but the most important thing for me was the hard drive, both internally and externally. I upgraded the Mac with a Solid State Drive, which I would definitely recommend if you are in the market for a Mac. In looking at the external drive, I was researching Western Digital, IOmega, Seagate, G-technology, and La Cie. I wanted at least 1TB, firewire 800, support of Mac's time machine, solidly built, and compact. The build quality of the La Cie sets itself apart from the others. It's an all aluminum body, that even without a fan, does not heat up as the heat dissipates through the body. It is absolutely silent. You only know it's working when you see the blue light flashing. The other great thing about the La Cie, is when you are using the firewire 800, it is bus-powered, so there is no need for the AC adapter. It has a small footprint and is very portable. Using the firewire 800 is fast. Not as fast as e-SATA; however, that is not supported on the Mac. La Cie is coming out with it's new Little Big Disk with Thunderbolt technology and SSD. However, since that will probably cost more than 5x as much as this, I would put that $ into the interal SSD on the Mac and get this product for the external hard drive. This product also has a 3-year warranty. Highly recommended.

LaCie External Hard Drive Rocks! . The speed of this hard drive is incredible. I am very happen with this product and will buy another eventually.
Great little device . First, let's start by establishing that I was a marine and my general philosophy about the French is that they're useful when you want to retreat. LaCie is the only French company I have intentionally done business with in many years.
I purchased this drive because I landed a job 100 miles from home and I wanted to establish a virtual machine that I could easily transport. The RAID0 is so easy and transparent that I forgot it existed. I haven't needed it yet (don't let the drive hear me say that!)
I created one NTFS partition, one HFS (Mac) and one FAT32, the first two nearly 500G and the last was 32G. I have only used the NTFS partition. I created a VMWare virtual machine. At home, I use the AC adapter and eSATA to access the VM, and on the laptop I either use FW800 or FW800 for power and eSATA for data. I use a Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard as my laptop.
I use the drive at home when I don't need to go into the office, I use it on the train with the FW800/eSATA, and I plug it in at the office with the AC adapter. I have not had any data loss, but I use Mozy to back it up online and a complicated scheme to keep a second backup at home. The drive is rugged, and the case doesn't show any scratches. It is fairly forgiving--there were two times that I had the FW interface going and plugged in eSATA--but I am generally very careful to hook it up when everything is off. As an aside, I use the OWC eSATA ExpressCard and get great results.
The drive is pricey, but it's a rugged and robust design.

The product description is misleading on Amazon . This drive comes with:
eSATA
FW800
FW400
and...lastly
USB 2.0
Don't let the USB 2.0 fool you. My general review statements are in the picture captions.
Since your mileage may vary (especially USB 2.0) and FW800/400 tend to use Oxford 924 chips, the performance is highly dependent on the destination computer/hard drive and the hard drive that is inside of the LaCie, a performance test would not be relevant.

Cons Review
Good except... . This is a great drive except that the eSATA is not reliable on either MacOS X or Win7/Vista.
If you are only using USB 2 or FireWire 400/800, then this drive is very reliable and great. But if you have important data, don't rely on using the eSATA. You might see data corruption.
So, you ask, why did you give this LaCie Quadra Little Big Disk a one star review? Because of the following:
- eSATA causes data corruption which is unacceptable. If the eSATA isn't going to work well, don't include it
- Customer Service recognizes that doing large transfers over eSATA may cause data corruption. Does that make sense? Send me a private message for my service transcripts to see what they said about this.
I have had many Little Big Disks. And again, if you use ONLY the USB2/FW800 ports, you'll love this drive. Imagine this scenario though... you have important data on the drive and always use FW800. Great! You go over to a friend's and the plug in eSATA not knowing it's buggy. All your data gone.
That happened to me. Twice. Tested and repeatable. One star stands.

General LaCie Review . I purchased a LaCie Little Big Disk to use on my Apple network four years ago for Christmas. Within a year the power brick started to smell like it was burning. The disk was plugged into my Apple router and on a UPS. I contacted LaCie, and they replaced the brick. Within a few months, the brick started smoking. I again contacted LaCie, and after going through their hoops, they sent a second brick. Again, within a few months the brick died, and smelled like it burned. I had placed the third one on a new power conditioner, but it still burned out. This time when I contacted LaCie, they refused to support me as the warranty had expired, even though this was an on-going problem with an extensive history. The drive has been in my drawer since last Christmas, and I'm using a cheap 1 TB Western Digital drive without any issues. I'll never buy from LaCie again.
