Easy to use and somewhat compact . Can't speak for the drive's longevity yet, but right from the box it worked like a charm in my HP "Pocket Media" bay. Backed up over 50,000 photos, plus everything in My Documents, and popped it out. Cabled it to my laptop and synched a few files back & forth. Updated and repeated synching in one month, and so far, so good. Very easy to use, and it's plug & play. Much smaller than the old "My Book" external drives I used to use. A bit bigger than the "Passport Essential" I have at work, but as a backup stores neatly away in a drawer in its case (included).
Works As Described . I bought this drive so it can fit into the HP XB4 docking station. Install was flawless and works great.

HP Pocket Media Drive 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive (Black/Silver) Opinions
Great drive super quiet and easy to use . I bought this drive from HPs shopping site (shopping.hp.com), saved over $15 off Amazon's price and got free shipping. It fits in the Pocket Media slot of my HTPC and is super quiet. That was really important to me since it's for viewing movies and such. It's really small and runs off USB as well so it's great for taking on the go. No problems at all.
Good little drive for back ups . I've had this drive for months and I have to say I am impressed. It's really plug and play. There is backup software on the drive itself. While I have used it I found it to be cumbersome and very time consuming. Using Windows Explorer is actually a better way to move files.

The drive is still working perfectly, and I haven't exactly been easy on it. It's generally located with my HP docking station, although I have no idea how to plug it directly into the docking station as HP advertised it could do. It appears to need some sort of rails because one would need super human 12" slender fingers to be able to push the drive into the connector located deep inside the docking station. I gave up on trying to do that and just use the included cable and plug it into a high speed USB port on either the docking station or directly into my laptop.

While installed, and it is a hot plug, so you can pop it on easily without a reboot, it acts as if it's a second hard drive installed in any PC. It's fast with no lag time when used with Explorer.

Like the case that comes with the drive. Not too thrilled about the so called "user manual" which is basically a pictorial; my guess is this is so they wouldn't have to print out 10 different languages. It's not necessary, nor is it informative, so save the paper HP.

I did purchase the extended warranty as I've read the reviews on here and apparently this drive has a high rate of failure. So far though, all is well. It's a nice piece of insurance as I have a lot of music and picture files that should be located in a secondary place. Why use an online backup service and pay them for the space on their server, when you can have a backup on a portable hard drive?

All in all a very good purchase. Just wish I could actually plug this drive directly into the docking station as they advertise. Great idea but where are the rails?
JQ-Dublin . Purchased HP Pocket Media Drive at Christmas. I use it mainly as an additional hard disk for my data. It is also very useful for transferring data to other computers. So far it works perfectly and the installation was simplicity itself. I am very satisfied with the product.

The Amazon ordering process was also easy to follow and the delivery was prompt & the product was in perfect condition.

Cons Review
Watch out for HP Warranty service . I purchased this item direct from HP about 5 months ago to add to my HP computer. The drive is small compact and neat. However, it failed after five months. Neither the internal USB port or any external USB port would recogonize the drive. All my backups are in limbo.

WARNING: under HP's customer service you essentially have NO WARRANTY! After the drive failed, I spent approx. three hours on "chat" with two tek support people. Then two more hours with two different support people in India, of course. Went round and round, test after test over and over with each person...changing cables, changing ports, etc. etc. Finally they demanded that I "restore" the computer to the software configuration as it came from the factory. This would wipe out a dozen or so third party programs and other data on the computer. I said "no way" and after Five Hours of on line trying to get the unit replaced under warranty, I simply gave up...They won....no replacement for my drive.

I have always liked and purchased HP products, but given their rediculous handling of service claims, I no longer will be doing that. I really wonder if the HP top management has any idea as to how BAD their customer service is.

So, go with HP if you wish....but realize that, in effect, you likely will have no warranty if you ever need it.
Product failed on third use and I'm still waiting on HP service . I bought this drive to use in backing up my HP Slim Pavillion desktop. I love the desktop, and it has a bay that allows you to slip the pocket media drive right in.
I used it twice to easily backup the PC, but the third time it started making a high-pitched whining noise and the PC would not recognize it. I tried to use it with two other PCs, and they could not recognized or install the USB device, either.
I sent the drive in for warranty service. Knowing how little it cost (about $90), I figured they'd just send me a new one. Well, I sent it in October, they showed receipt at the beginning of November, and now it's almost January, 2010. It's very difficult to connect with anyone in HP Support. They work very hard to funnel you into a single 800 phone number, which connects you into a maze of support functions and agents that are clearly off-shore. You get passed from one department/agent to another, as they read from a script and ask you to provide each one your name, email address, phone number, work order number, and nature of request.
I keep getting told that there are "parts shortages" that are delaying shipment of the drive back to me, yet there seem to be plenty of drives to be purchased, including units from HP's own online store. Any further questioning stymies them completely and causes them to pass you off to some other department and agent.
I loved the drive (both of the two times I used it), but it failed so soon and HP's consumer support just seems to be absolutely horrible. ESPECIALLY after experiencing Apple's support, where they go out of their way to try to solve your problem -- even for a $15 iTunes card!!!!
Sorry HP - I hope I get my drive back. If I don't, I'll cut my losses, consider it a lesson learned, and make that pocket drive my last HP purchase.
