Know why you are buying this . So I read the reviews here, took the plunge and would say the *only* reason you should be buying this over another vendor's external HD is the E-SATA interface. E-SATA is mighty fast and blows away USB. As others have mentioned, you need to reformat this to NTFS to save big files and I wiped the virtual partition. The backup software is junk - go download a freeware copy of GFI Backup which is way better. It works fine, but for the average plug and play person who is not tech savy this is probably too much work.

Toshiba 640 GB External Hard Drive PH3064U-1EXB . The Toshiba hard drive arrived earlier than I had expected. When I installed it, the set up process went smoothly and I experienced no problems. I backed up pretty much everything on my desk top computer hard drive, with no problems. So far, it has been a wise choice. I was looking for a reliable data storage source, and I believe I have found it. It is easy to use and holds lots of data. Time will be the real test!

Massive storage device for cheep price A+++++++ . Was amazed on how low the price was for so much disk space. not much to say accept that I'm very pleased with it and I would recommend it to anyone.
Toshiba 640 GB USB desktop external hard drive . I love it easy to use. Right now I am using it to store all my pictures on. Great product.
Prompt delivery & good price . Ordered from Beach Camera on 10/21 and received before noon on 10/22. Have not tested drive yet; but it is in original sealed packaging. On / off switch, password, and encryption promise to be attractive features. Hope I do not encounter problems that will require me to edit this rating.
10/23- Did first full system encrypted backup (~140Gb) in 3+ hours, transfer rate was about 550 Mb/Min.

Cons Review
Irritating proprietary software . A pretty great desktop drive -- lots of space for the price.
The irritating part is that it comes with drivers and completely unnecessary software via a Virtual CD partition on the drive that so far I've found to be IMPOSSIBLE to remove. If you're planning to use this with the XBOX 360, get a different drive, as it will mount the Virtual CD first and never mount your actual hard drive with your files on it.
I've emailed Toshiba and will update my review if they provide any sort of solution.
